Supermarket giant Tesco has announced plans for a multi-million pound new store in Harborough.

It wants to build the store - which would be comparable in size to the town’s Sainsbury’s - on Rockingham Road at the site of the former Focus DIY store.

The move would create the equivalent of 200 full-time jobs, Tesco announced today (Monday, September 16)

The proposal will be displayed at a two-day public exhibition in the Three Swans Hotel on September 27 and 28, ahead of a planning application to Harborough District Council.

Simon Petar, Tesco Corporate Affairs Manager, said the company wanted as many people as possible to visit the exhibition and express their views.

He added: “We have been serving the community from our Metro since 1966 and we think a new Tesco supermarket will prove just as popular.

“We are encouraging residents to join us in the Three Swans Hotel where they can view the plans and ask questions of our project team.

“We respect the views of the local community and welcome comments and suggestions that can influence our proposals, before a planning application is submitted to Harborough District Council in the coming weeks.”

Tesco said the new store would feature the full range of food, grocery and household goods offered by Tesco, with around 280 car parking spaces and free parking for three hours.

The firm said the move would create 200 full time equivalent new jobs and that positions would be offered to local people as a priority.

The public exhibition in the Fairfax Room of The Three Swans Hotel, in High Street will be held on Friday, September 27 from 10am – 5pm and Saturday (September 28) from 10am – 2pm.
