A terrified motorist almost collided with a lorry heading straight at her after heavy rain flooded the busy A6 under a railway bridge.

Christina Hill, 46, said she missed the truck by a whisker on the blackspot stretch on the edge of Kibworth Beauchamp.

She’s now calling for Leicestershire County Council to act urgently to resolve the flooding issue – six months after she initially alerted the authority.

Christina, of Market Harborough, said: “It’s high time the council acted – and sorted out this problem once and for all.

“I could have been killed when I was nearly hit head on there by a lorry.

“My heart was in my mouth.

“The council has to take action there before there’s a serious accident.”

She has to drive under the railway bridge most days as she heads into Kibworth to work as a head chef at a residential home.

“The road has flooded under the bridge since at least the end of last year.

“There must be a problem with the drain there.

“It’s obviously not clearing away rainwater and operating properly,” insisted Christina, who’s been commuting to Kibworth for 16 years.

“I spoke to the county council to highlight this situation in February.

“They said they’d send out staff to look at it and promised to repair it within 90 days.

“But I haven’t heard anything since and this is as dangerous as ever.

“So when are they going to actually do something and put this right?”

Talking about her heartstopping near-miss, she said: “The road was flooded so I indicated and pulled out a little bit to skirt around the water.

“All of a sudden a huge lorry appeared, coming straight at me.

“I dodged straight back fully on to my side of the road as I tried to miss the flood and the wagon at the same time.

“It was the worst incident I’ve had along there – it was very frightening.”

Christina desperately wants the county council to investigate and act before the weather takes a turn for the worse.

“We will obviously get a lot more rain heading into the autumn and winter.

“It’s got to the point where I dread the experience of having to drive along there,” she said.

“The A6 was quieter when so many people were furloughed during the coronavirus lockdown.

“But it’s become much busier again – and more traffic means that we face far more chance of a crash.

“This should be simple enough for the council to resolve.

“So please do what you have to now before someone is seriously injured there or even killed.”

A spokesperson for Leicestershire county council said: “Our teams cleared the gullies earlier this year.

However, following further reports of concerns, we’ll be going back to do some further clearing and checking gullies as we want to resolve any issues urgently.”
