Talented young musicians battle it out in a tightly-fought finals night

Great Bowden Recital Trust’s Junior X Factor contest reached its conclusion at Market Harborough Congregational Church’s Jubilee Hall in Bowden Lane on Friday night.

Overall winner was singer Lily Ingall.

The final followed heats for different age groups earlier this month at Great Bowden Village Hall on the weekend of March 13 to 15.

It was described by the organisers as more “tightly-fought than ever before”.

The contest and tickets for the final were both free and the event is now the largest and most established music competition for young people in the area.

It was open to all young instrumentalists and vocalists from school years 1 to 13 who live within 15 miles of Market Harborough who either performed as soloists or with a group.

After listening to one entrant every seven minutes for more than eight hours during the heats earlier in the month, the judges Andrew Cartwright, Kathryn Cartwright, Debbie Smith and Ryan West awarded 11 of the acts the opportunity to compete in the finals.

Chairman of the recital trust Mr Cartwright said: “The standard is usually extremely high in this competition but this year saw all of the finalists step up to the mark even more than ever before.

“It was a phenomenal evening showcasing the breadth and depth of the huge amount of young musical talent that Market Harborough has to offer – we can’t wait until next year. The audience was staggered by the high level and confidence of every single one of the finalists.”

Each of the finalists were assessed for the communication of their piece, performance, technique and accuracy and must have been awarded 80 per cent or more by the judges in the heats to earn themselves a place in the Finals.

“All the finalists had prepared well, thought long and hard about how best to communicate to a full capacity, hugely appreciative audience and performed superbly throughout the evening,” added Mr Cartwright.

Each heat winner was presented with £50 of vouchers kindly donated by town music shop MH Music of St Mary’s Road.

The overall winner was presented with £100 of vouchers and a glass engraved trophy with the runners-up and third-placed finisher also winning trophies. And the most promising performers received funding for six months of music lessons funded by the recital trust.
