Sponsor Chris for ten-week aid trip to poverty-stricken Fiji

A teenager is organising a beach-themed charity event to raise money for his overseas aid-work trip to Fiji.

Chris Merlane, of Kibworth, is holding the event at Market Harborough Rugby Club next Saturday, at 8pm.

It will feature music, fair games, a raffle and auction with prizes including a mini motor bike donated by Bikes4Fun and a Windows tablet from eBECS.

The 18-year-old is fundraising for a ten-week volunteering trip to the poorest region of Fiji from April 28.

He said: “We think of Fiji as an exotic holiday destination but the stark reality is the local people live in poverty and the infrastructure is so poor .

“Most homes only have electricity for short periods, no flushing toilet and a shower is a bucket of water.”

Chris will be helping to build a school and coaching rugby with local children.

He has taken on three jobs to help boost his fundraising and pay for the flights.

Tickets for the charity event cost £5 in advance and are available from the rugby club, in Northampton Road.

Pukka Pies and Kibworth and Fleckney Rotary Club have kindly donated money so far. To sponsor him, email christopher@merlane.co.uk.
