Lutterworth College pupil and Kibworth and Smeeton Juniors football club member Kian Gill was just 15 when he died after a collision with a car on a country lane between Lutterworth and Gilmorton in May this year.

He was described in the tributes that followed his death as “a fabulous lad to know”.

Now a ‘Special K’ day has been set up to raise money for remembrance benches and for the Laura Centre charity, which offers a counselling service for bereaved parents.

The fundraising day will be on Friday, November 27, from 3pm to 9pm to coincide with Lutterworth Christmas Lights switch on.

The central event is a static cycle ride which aims to clock up 259 miles - the equivalent of cycling to Bude in Cornwall, one of Kian’s favourite places.

The on-the-spot cycle will happen at several sites including Lutterworth Cycle Centre, George Street, Lutterworth, on November 27.

Money will also be raised from non-uniform days at local schools, and a raffle for prizes including a year of free cereals for a family donated by Kellogs, a Leicester City Football Club stadium tour and a Leicester Tigers signed shirt.

Fundraising committee member Sarah Elliott said: “The plan is to raise money for two benches; one to be placed at the site of the accident and one in the town.

“The rest of the money raised is to be donated to The Laura Centre. The Laura Centre offer a specialist bereavement counselling service for parents whose child has died.”

The whole day has been coined The Special K Day, a nickname that Kian’s parents gave to Kian.

“It will give the community an opportunity to reflect and recall fond memories of Kian,” said Sarah.
