The generosity of people in the Harborough district has been lauded after a scout group raise a record amount from its annual Santa’s sleigh rides tour.

The 3rd Market Harborough Scouts Group accompanied Father Christmas around Harborough last month, taking in more than 155 streets in the town as well as Lubenham, Gartree, Foxton, Little Bowden and Great Bowden over the course of 23 nights.

A collection was carried out each night with money raised going to group funds and its nominated charity this year, family support organisation Home-Start.

Alison Smith, secretary of the group, said: “Thank you to everyone who supported us.

“Due to the generosity of the people of Harborough and surrounding villages the total raised was £5,669.74 which was just fantastic – our highest year ever.

“This year we nominated the Harborough branch of Home-Start to benefit too, and I know it will be put to good use.

“We would also like to thank the volunteers who gave up their time to assist Santa each evening sometimes in the wind and rain, and to Protheroes garage whose continued support allows Rudolph to prepare for Christmas Eve.”
