A road in the Harborough area was closed off by police on Saturday after a car skidded off the highway in icy conditions.

The sub-zero temperatures had left the Stoke Albany Road between Ashley and Stoke Albany dangerously icy so officers closed it off with traffic cones and a sign to enable Northamptonshire County Council to come out and grit the road.

One car had already fell victim to the ice at about 3.30pm on the Saturday.

A silver-coloured car, described as like a Vauxhall Tigra, had spun off the road and become wedged in a hedge.

The female driver did not require hospital treatment, a spokesman for Northants police said this morning (Monday), and the car was later removed by the owner.

Police received two calls from the public about the crash.

It is not yet clear when the road was re-opened. It was still closed off at 7pm on Saturday night.
