Community centre and Harborough school sport facilities set to benefit from council cash

More than £700,000 is being ploughed into crucial community schemes across Harborough by the district council.

A huge chunk of the money is being used to totally revamp a popular community centre at Scraptoft.

And the sports facilities at Robert Smyth Academy in Market Harborough are to be brought bang up to date.

The Section 106 cash has been handed over by developers for community projects and social infrastructure near where new housing estates have sprang up.

Blueprints which have successfully applied for funding are:

- The Hub at Scraptoft – £536,108 to increase the size of the hall and create a new kitchen, lounge area and storage areas

- Kibworth Cricket Club – £60,000 to create a pavilion for ladies, juniors and disability cricket.

Floor space will be more than doubled providing larger dressing rooms with toilets and showers.

The kitchen will be expanded and will include storage space.

The social space will double in size.

The spectator viewing patio will also increase in capacity and the score box will be replaced by a digital one

- Robert Smyth Academy, Burnmill Road, Harborough – £50,000 to refurbish four netball/tennis courts, including floodlighting on three courts for school and community use.

Anchor points have been added to accommodate a future dome for indoor sports

- Kibworth Joint recreation Committee – £26,860 to create a multi-use games area on the site of the former skate park area at Warwick Road Recreation Ground.

- Aylestone St James RFC, Scraptoft – £20,000 to upgrade the clubhouse facilities and development of the roof space

- Lutterworth Cemetery – £18,254 to provide railings for Lutterworth Cemetery.

Cllr Michael Rickman, Harborough District Council’s Cabinet member for communities, said: “This is a sizeable amount of money which will make a huge positive impact to help create and support infrastructure in areas where housing has been developed.

“We will endeavour to make sure that areas that take development continue to benefit in this way.”

The council is now urging organisations from areas with Section 106 funding to apply for cash.
