And there was a significant increase in English results, up 10 per cent on the previous year.

It follows on from a creditable set of A-Level results at Robert Smyth last week which saw standards keep pace with a 15-year high the previous year, while AS results were even better than 2014.

Results in all the core GCSE subjects were “very impressive” said the school in a press release this morning with 84 per cent of students achieving A* to C grades in maths, 77 per cent in English and 83 per cent in science.

Nearly two-thirds (64 per cent) of students earned five A* to C grades including English and maths, a 5 per cent rise year-on-year.

There were also “outstanding results” in many other subjects including triple science, French, Spanish, music, dance, geography, art, economics, music and RE, with many of these showing a “significant improvement” on 2014.

“High numbers of students” (the school did not give a figure) achieved top grades in many subjects with 65 per cent achieving A*’s or A’s in triple science, 43 per cent in history and geography, 35 per cent in languages and 25 per cent in maths.

The school’s principal Sue Jones said: “We are absolutely delighted with these results.

“Staff and students have worked harder than ever to raise achievement and this has paid off.

“Our particular focus on English over the last two years has resulted not only in a significant increase in grades A* to C in English, bringing it in line with the other core subjects, but also in a huge improvement in the progress measures, with 76 per cent of students achieving or exceeding expected progress, up 14 per cent on last year.

“There has been a huge emphasis on ensuring that students are confident for the exams and that they know exactly which areas they need to improve on following their mock exams in December and March.

“This has obviously paid off and these results are a real boost for the academy and also allows our students to progress onto their chosen pathways next year.

“Ofsted recognised in March that we were working hard to improve results and it is so rewarding for everyone to see the impact of that work.”

“Our thanks also go to our parents who have supported students through the months of preparation and revision, and worked closely with teachers to ensure that students fulfil their potential.”

There were many outstanding individual performances by students again this year and a total of 70 students hauled in five or more A* or A grades.

Teenagers Gina Harland, Jonathan Kim and George Lawton all gained a mighty seven A* grades among their tally of subjects, while Charlotte Moncrief, Rebecca Iliffe and Asher Winter completed an amazing clean sweep of A*’s for all their GCSEs!
