Market Harborough & District Diabetes UK Group has handed over a cheque for £2,000 to Diabetes UK as they help to combat the dangerous illness.

Ian Humphreys, chairman of the Harborough set-up, said: “We have about 30 members and they have done ever so well to raise this money.

“It’s crucial that we do all we can to fund new research so we were delighted to collect £2,000.”

He said they had generated most of the sum after staging an autumn fayre at Harborough’s St Dionysius Church last year.

“We sold merchandise and services donated by local businesses.

“The event raised £895.

“We sold our remaining stock from a stall at Harborough Market – that brought in a further £400,” said Ian.

“The final odds and ends sold at a boot sale made another £50.

“We made the rest from donations (Waitrose being the largest) and a disco kindly held for us – which raked in £150.

“We also hold monthly raffles with prizes donated by the committee and the members.”

Ian said they hold group meetings at Roman Way Day Centre, 36 Roman Way, Harborough, on the first Thursday of every month between March and November (excluding August). “You are all welcome to attend our meetings and we host a guest speaker each month. “Our meetings are free to attend and we are always seeking new members,” he said.
