The honour pays tribute to much-loved local entrepreneur and business stalwart Alastair Campbell, who sadly died in June this year.

He passed away aged 51 two years after a cardiac arrest left him severely brain damaged.

Alastair set up and ran The Ideal Marketing Company in Harborough.

The PR chief helped the directors launch Race Harborough, which stages the Tunnel Run, Harborough Triathlon and Santa Run.

Each event raises money for local charities.

Brian Corcoran and Kenny Anderson, of Race Harborough, joined with Ideal Marketing’s current owner Jess Shailes to create the award.

The accolade will be awarded annually to volunteers who deserve special recognition for their support at Race Harborough events.

Brian said: “Alastair played a very important part in many community events and organisations.

“His support, enthusiasm, energy and marketing knowledge was immensely helpful when we were setting up Race Harborough back in 2014.

“He was always happy to offer his time and help as he believed very strongly in the importance of keeping fit and healthy in a way that could be accessible to everyone.”

The inaugural Alastair Campbell award went to proud Jo Howell for her outstanding contribution to Race Harborough in 2019.

The honour was presented to Jo at the Santa Run in Welland Park by Alastair’s wife Helen.

Helen also took part in the spectacular Christmas celebration race for the first time in Alastair’s memory.

“Race Harborough couldn’t function without the support of people like Jo who turn out in all weather to help make these events run smoothly.

“So it’s nice to be able to show how much we appreciate that support,” adds Brian.

Alastair helped set up and run the Business Agenda and Working Breakfast not-for-profit networking groups for businesses.

He was also president of Harborough’s Chamber of Commerce at the time of his cardiac arrest.

His wife Helen said: “Having lived in Harborough for over 20 years, Alastair was always keen to try and give something back. “He was also passionate about wellbeing in general and running in particular - so this award really sums up what he was all about. “It is comforting to see that his impact and contribution has not been forgotten.”

This year’s Santa Run saw over 400 Santas of all ages run a 2km or 5km circuit around Welland Park on Sunday (Dec 8).

The event raised about £1000 for local charities, including the Squires Effect.
