The pupil involved attends Ridgeway Primary Academy on The Ridgeway, off Great Bowden Road.

The affected child and other children who have been in close contact with them are now being forced to self-isolate for 14 days.

They are having to go into quarantine at home in a bid to minimise the risk of spreading the virus and protect other kids and staff as well as local people.

The school, which has about 280 pupils aged from 4-11, only re-opened last week following the summer holidays and long coronavirus lockdown.

Staff there are working alongside Public Health England’s Local Heath Protection Scheme after the child’s positive case emerged over the weekend.

Elspeth Williams, chair of local governors, said: “We can confirm that a child at Ridgeway Primary Academy has tested positive for coronavirus.

“Keeping our pupils, staff and local communities safe is our highest priority.”

She added: “We have followed Government guidance and taken all of the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus and protect our pupils and staff.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England’s Local Health Protection Team.”

The pupil who has tested positive is believed to be in the school’s Key Stage One year group for children aged from 5 to 7.
