The big-hearted teacher is now urging people all over to let someone give them a quick trim at home – while backing frontline health workers.

Gobsmacked Nick told the Harborough Mail: “The support has been fantastic – beyond anything I imagined.

“We have had haircuts and donations from all over - from Preston to London, from Wales and even from Corfu!

“We've had Facebook live streams of haircuts, kids with haircuts, kids giving haircuts and even a seven-year-old girl who has cut all of her hair off after her mum and older sister did the same.”

He added: “One chap even donated £200.

“It was his usual petrol bill for a month because he was working from home.

“There are some great stories to see and read on the Facebook page 'Buzzing for the NHS'.

“One lady suggested that we should save any hair longer than 20cm to give to cancer wig charities - a great idea!

“I am so grateful to anyone that has taken part and donated.

“We would love to keep the momentum going, keep spreading the message and keep raising money for the brilliant charity - NHS Charities Together.”

Nick, who teaches at a local primary school, told how he conjured up his magic brainchild.

“This just came to me as I was thinking of different ways to entertain my lively kids stuck at home.

“I’ve got the four-year-old and a two-year-old so it’s been quite a challenge,” said Nick, who lives in Market Harborough.

“So I let my little boy cut my hair with a pair of broken beard trimmers.

“Now I’ve got chunks of hair missing out of the back of my head!

“My wife Hayley, who was standing nearby just in case, said he’d well and truly butchered it.

“It’s a very good job I’m not at all vain.

“My lad loved it and we got the ball rolling raising cash so everyone’s a winner.

“So many of us are trying to think up new ideas of supporting our fantastic NHS staff in this challenging time,” said Nick.

“They are simply incredibly heroic.

“Our health service staff are truly showing great British grit and determination.

“They are putting themselves in harm’s way day in day out to save lives and help people.

“They are incredibly admirable and all those working at the coalface are real heroes.”

The dad-of-two also paid tribute to other key workers keeping the country moving during this tough lockdown.

Posties, shopworkers, binmen and farmers are just a few of the critical workers doing essential work.

“They all deserve all our thanks and should be taking huge pride in what they are doing,” insisted Nick.
