Organiser Ian Clarkson said: “Rotarians do this just before Christmas every year - and the people of the town are always very generous.

"Perhaps they take pity on us standing in the cold.

"It’s lovely to find how calm and happy many people are, even so close to the big event of Christmas Day.”

He added: “They give us their change from their last-minute shopping.

“It makes people feel good to be supporting charities at Christmas."

All funds raised will go to support Market Harborough Musical Memory Box and Leicestershire Admiral Nurses.

Money will also donated to a Rotary International charity, the worldwide campaign to end polio.

Market Harborough Musical memory box charity holds regular sessions using music and singing with an experienced leader to help improve confidence, reminiscences and mood.

The groups are for people affected by dementia, other brain injury or for anyone who might benefit.

They aim to start a weekly group in Harborough District in 2020.

Leicestershire Admiral nurses provide home care for people with dementia in a similar way to care given by Macmillan nurses for people with cancer.

The Rotary International campaign to End Polio Now is battling to eradicate polio from all over the world by immunising every child against polio.

The programme of immunisation has wiped out polio almost all over but it still poses a threat in Africa and Asia.

Immunisation against polio is given by drops into the mouth.

Each dose costs 50p.

Immunisation must continue to prevent polio coming back.
