“It’s unfortunate that due to the pandemic crisis this year’s Armed Forces Day has had to be cancelled.

“But it will be celebrated virtually on Saturday June 27,” said Stewart.

“This very special landmark day can be watched and enjoyed on the Armed Forces Day Social channels.

“So please tune in and show your support for our fantastic military from your homes.”

The former RAF and Army serviceman said Harborough District Council will raise the Armed Forces Standard at the Symington Building in Market Harborough at 10.30am on Monday June 22.

“It will go ahead without the usual civic ceremony.

“But shoppers, passers-by and everyone else are very welcome to pause for a few moments to celebrate our Armed Forces past, present and future.

“The Royal British Legion will also be raising the Armed Forces Standard in the Memorial Gardens at 10.45am,” said Stewart, who’s been locked down in Perth, Western Australia, for three months.

“The public will be very welcome to attend.

“Our armed forces role is varied and our thousands of servicemen and women are required to defend the UK and our interests abroad.

“They are busy working around the world, promoting peace, delivering much-needed aid, tackling drug smugglers, providing security and combating terrorism.

“The week leading up to Armed Forces Day starting on June 22 intends to highlight the different elements of the military via Themed days.”

The local RBL chief said Global Armed Forces Day will be celebrated on Monday June 22.

Reserves Day will be marked on Wednesday June 24 and Veterans Day on Thursday June 25.

“Friday June 26 will be Cadet Forces Day.

“Sea cadets, army cadets, air cadets and the Combined Cadet Forces make up 130,000 young people in more than 300 locations across the UK who receive life and career building skills as well as Vocational Qualifications.

“For those who have access to the internet, please look at the Armed Forces Day Facebook and Twitter pages as well as www.armedforcesday.org.uk/get-involved/salute to see how you can acknowledge the work of our Service people by sending them a salute!”
