Generous supporters in Leicestershire help children's hospice raise more than £125,500

Generous supporters in Leicestershire helped Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People to raise more than £125,500 over the festive period.

In December, the Covid-19 crisis meant the charity was unable to stage any of its usual Christmas events and instead, called on the public to support Rainbows virtually.

Supporters gave festive donations of £98,664 for the hospice’s Christmas Fundraising Appeal and a Virtual Christmas Concert, a Virtual Christmas Tree and Virtual Quiz brought in an additional £5,450.

Each year, people take part in organised Santa Runs for Rainbows. In 2020 the charity asked people to don their Santa suits and take part in the event in a location, and at a time, convenient to them. This virtual challenge raised more than £11,500, which will go towards providing vital care for more than 450 youngsters with life-limiting illnesses and help for their families.

Jane Burns, director of supporter relations at Rainbows, said: “As for everyone, 2020 was an incredibly difficult year for Rainbows. We had to cancel almost all of our fundraising events and our shops were forced to close three times. Fundraising also took a huge hit.

“So to receive so many generous donations over the festive period, when we know times are difficult for everyone, is overwhelming and we simply cannot thank people enough for their continued and dedicated support.

“As the only children’s hospice in the East Midlands, Rainbows is crucial to so many families, even more so at this time of crisis when they are feeling more isolated than ever. By supporting us, you are ensuring we provide continued specialist care for their children and helping them to create special and treasured memories.”
