Night of improvised sound offers music without rules

A night of improvised music is being held at a Harborough pub later this month.

The four-piece South Leicestershire Improvisers Ensemble are playing a free gig at Beerhouse, off St Mary’s Road, from 8.30pm next Thursday, January 29.

The band’s drummer Lee Allatson explained: “Free improvisation is music without any rules beyond the logic or inclination of the musicians involved – sounds made from spontaneous interaction.

“British guitarist Derek Bailey said the form offers musicians more possibilities per cubic second than any genre.

“Diversity is its most consistent characteristic.”

The band comprises Lee on drums, Oliver Betts on woodwind and keys, Bruce Coates on sax and Trevor Lines on bass.
