Residents on Harborough’s Southern Estate are set to benefit after the Post Office announced extended opening hours and a new modern look at its Western Avenue branch.

The refurbished Western Avenue Post Office will have three serving positions and offer a new car tax renewal service for customers.

Its opening hours will be from 8am to 9pm from Monday to Saturday and 9am to 5pm on Sundays – a total of 36-and-a-half more hours a week. The branch currently opens 8.30pm to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 1pm on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays.

The three new serving positions will include one traditional screened position, an open-plan layout and a Post Office serving point at the retail counter.

The work is part of a nationwide investment programme.

The branch will close on Thursday, February 20, and reopen on Monday, March 3.

Customers will be directed to the nearest branches in St Mary’s Place and at Connaught Road in Harborough during the closure period.

Post Office area manager Caroline Pritchard said: “We understand how important Post Office services are to the people of Harborough and we are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

“The modernisation is part of a major investment programme to convert the Post Office network to new-style branches and this investment, the largest in the history of the Post Office, marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”

Sir Edward Garnier, the MP for Harborough, said: “This is good news. My constituents will be glad to hear about the proposals for the Western Avenue post office. I understand that the improvement work will take place been Friday, 21 February and Monday, 3 March. Whilst that is being done people can use the post offices on St Marys Place or the Connaught Road Post Office on Connaught Road but I am sure they will put up with any temporary inconvenience in order to have a better service in Western Avenue very soon.”
