Lutterworth Mayor, Cllr Tony Hirons, flicked on the lights to massive cheers at 7.30pm.

The ceremony went with a bang as the traditional fireworks display lit up the Town Hall Square.

Holly Guy, who helps to stage the entire event for the town council, said it was so busy that Santa’s sleigh struggled to get down Church Street.

She said: “Santa’s grotto at the Memorial Gardens was jampacked with excited children!”

Revellers took the chance to do some late-night Christmas shopping as cheerful crowds thronged stores, bars, pubs and cafes.

“Everyone had a fantastic night.

“I’d also like to thank over 40 volunteers and marshals who gave up their time for free,” said Holly.

“This wouldn’t happen without them – they do a brilliant job every year.”

Lutterworth Town Council would also like to thank all the local businesses which sponsored the event and donated their time and money.

The council said a special thank you to the Rotary Club of Lutterworth Wycliffe and Lutterworth Rotary Club.
