THE VICTOR in last night's Harborough by-election was the Liberal Democrat Colin Davies.
Mr Davies was elected with a clear majority of 227 votes, beating Barry Champion (Conservative) into second place, with Geoffrey Dickens (BNP) third.
Mr Davies will now serve as councillor with Harborough District Council, representing the Welland ward, alongside fellow Welland ward councillors Roger Dunton (Lib Dem) and Julie Simpson (Lib Dem).
Voters in the town's Welland ward – covering the southern estate - went to the polls yesterday (Thursday, September 10).
It was the town's first by-election since 2004 and was needed after Liberal Democrat councillor Beverley Field resigned on July 28 as she had moved to Buckinghamshire.
The votes were counted at Harborough's Evangelical Church in Bath Street after polling booths closed at 10pm.
The result was as follows:
Barry Champion (Conservative) 373 votes
Colin Davies (Lib Dem) 600 votes
Geoffrey Dickens.(BNP) 122 votes
The turnout was 22.8 per cent of the 4,837 people who could have voted in the ward.
