The driver, who suffered head and back injuries, was rescued by firefighters after he squeezed out of his window to get on top of his rolled over cabin.

The shocking drama happened as the busy quarry on Welford Road, Husbands Bosworth, was in full flow at about 8.50am.

The huge truck rolled over as the driver tipped sand, police said, sparking a major 999 rescue operation.

The air ambulance helicopter, backed up by land ambulances and police, were called out after the alarm was raised.

And about 12 firefighters raced to the scene as an appliance from Lutterworth, an engine from Market Harborough and a specialist technical rescue team from Leicester’s Southern Station responded.

The stunned driver was swiftly rescued from his cab by fire crews deploying a special nine-metre ladder.

He was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries and firefighters were leaving the scene by 10am.

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “We were made aware of an incident at the quarry in Welford Road, Husbands Bosworth, around 9.15am today.

“A quarry lorry which was unloading sand turned on its side.

“The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“The incident happened within the site.”
