Helping out the stars of future

Potential sporting stars of the future from across the Harborough district were celebrated at a special grants handover last Friday.

Active Harborough District, the Local Sports Alliance, hosted the celebration event on Friday, March 10, at The Symington Building in Harborough, for young athletes who have been successful in their sport.

Each are being presented with Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport Go Gold performance level funding which can be used to help them advance in their chosen sport.

Cllr Michael Rickman, who presented the grants and who has responsibility for leisure and sport delivery for Harborough District Council, said: “Funding is so important for young athletes.

“It’s from this sort of funding that we encourage the Olympians of the future. In the past this funding has provided support for athletes to help them buy equipment, or help with travel costs or coaching which can give them a vital edge over their competitors.”

Ten athletes were chosen to receive £100 each.

Those selected for a grant were: Matthew Chilvers, tennis; Denika Millington, netball; Tom Moorhouse, hockey; Sam Moorhouse, hockey; Lottie Edwards, trampoline; Ailsa McDonald, swimming; Neve Grimes, athletics/running; Jody Smith, athletics/running; Jordan Waine, athletics/running; Georgina Watson, rugby.
