One neighbour reported hearing a “screeching of brakes and a lot of terrible screaming and shouting” as the drama erupted near long-established timber merchants Gibbs & Dandy.

The full-scale 999 operation was launched after the one-vehicle crash in Albany Road, off Great Bowden Road, just before 10.30am.

A battery of police cars dashed to the spot after the alarm was raised as officers quickly sealed off the whole area.

Stunned eye-witnesses said they saw two helicopters hovering overhead.

One of the air ambulance helicopters landed on the local green just yards away from people’s homes as shocked residents looked on.

Two medics, said to be wearing fully-protective hazmat suits amid the coronavirus crisis, were also at the scene as the drama unfolded.

Nobody tried to get any closer to see what was going on as the town continues to be locked down with the fight to combat the virus in full flow.

Police vehicles, including forensic science vans, were pictured parked up outside IT company SymCirrus.

Officers were also spotted going in to the building as an immediate investigation was launched in a bid to piece together what happened.

Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service said they were alerted at 10.29am today.

A Fire Control spokeswoman said they sent an appliance and a tactical response vehicle from Harborough as well as an appliance from Desborough to the crash.

East Midlands Ambulance Service are also believed to have despatched land ambulances to the accident.
