A group of friends from Harborough are competing to be the first past the finishing line in two charity challenges in tribute to lost loved ones.

The Mar-Har-athon event is taking place at Snap Fitness in town on Saturday, June 14, to raise money for The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation in memory of participant Becci Diver’s husband Stacey who died of lung cancer in 2011.

The event consists of two challenges – the Toe2Toe distance challenge and Fit Girls versus Fat Boys, a marathon between four fitness-mad girls and four middle-aged men.

Mark Pickering and Andy Horne are pals facing each other in Toe2Toe.

Mr Pickering said: “It all started when I put a post on Facebook following a stint at the gym, saying I had just hammered the bloke on the next treadmill – he of course had no idea I was competing against him.

“Days later, it turns out I’m not the only one with a competitive streak as Mark had a similar battle with a guy at the gym.

“Some wise guy then decided to say, ‘can you imagine what it would be like if they really were up against each other?’.”

Andy and Mark will be battling against each other to see who can travel the furthest in four hours on a cross-trainer.

Participants in Fit Girls v Fat Boys will compete to become the first to reach 26 miles, 365 yards on treadmills and cross trainers.
