Heavy rain flooded a string of country roads throughout Harborough at the weekend as well as vulnerable spots in Market Harborough.

Drivers will have to use caution and common sense as there is still a flood alert in force today along the Welland Valley, an Environment Agency spokesman said.

And more rain is set to fall in South Leicestershire over the next two days.

The EA spokesman warned: “More flooding is possible so our message is – be prepared.

“Over the last 36 hours we have seen heavy rainfall in the River Welland area as a result of Storm Dennis.

“This means that levels in the River Welland have risen, which will lead to flooding of low-lying land and roads close to the river.”

He added: “We expect the river to remain high throughout the next few days.

“Our forecasts indicate that flooding to properties isn't likely and therefore flood warnings are not expected to be issued.

“But please avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.

“We are constantly monitoring river levels.

“We also have staff out in the field checking for blockages and clearing weedscreens.”

The EA’s advice is being constantly updated so keep an eye on their website to stay up to date with the latest situation: flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/target-area/055WAF134TWVThe worst-hit local areas over the last 48 hours include Farndon Road, Lubenham, the Great Bowden to Thorpe Langton road, Stonton Wyville and Wistow.

The River Jordan burst its banks between Braybrooke and Harborough while trees were blown down across the district – including on the A427 near Dingley.

The Welland flooded parts of Welland Park in Harborough while the notorious Welland Quarter car park at the town’s railway station also ended up under several feet of water again.

Both Leicestershire and Northamptonshire fire brigades are urging reckless motorists not to drive through floodwater after a catalogue of incidents over the weekend.

Some drivers were even said to have moved flooding warning cones before getting stuck, forcing frustrated 999 crews to rescue them.

Meanwhile, the Bradshaw family of Marston Trussell have kindly sent us these striking pictures of The Square in Harborough under deep floodwater on January 26, 1939.

“They are taken from an old family photo album – and they’re rather apt for the weather we are having now,” said the family.
