The Conservative MP said he was proud to get behind the ‘litter womble’ initiative at an event in the House of Commons.

Neil said: “I’ve also joined the wombles for a pick in the constituency and seen first-hand their energy and enthusiasm in wanting to improve the local area.

“The councils are clamping down on flytipping and it’s very disappointing that people still resort to littering.

“But the volunteer wombles are doing an incredible job in the face of this.”

Litter wombles is the term affectionately given to volunteers who clear up trash in their own backyards.

South Leicestershire Litter Wombles do a fantastic job helping to keep Harborough, Blaby and Oadby and Wigston clean and green.

The community-spirited, eco-friendly band of brothers and sisters is going from strength to strength after being set up by Bob Lee last year.

Big-hearted Bob said: “It started with me going out with a few bags and borrowed litter picker.

“We now have a very active group with over 750 members.

“We’ve held picks all over South Leicestershire, covering parks, villages, town centres and country lanes.”

He added: “Many villages have also set up their own groups.

“So please do get in touch via our Facebook group if you’d be interested in getting involved.”

They have alerted Harborough council to go along and collect the mini-mountain of garbage after making our countryside a much better place.
