Development money pays for church rooms

Harborough Baptist Church has opened a much-needed new meeting room and toilets built with money collected from housing developments around the town.

The new facilities include a baby changing unit and are open alongside the two existing well-used church halls in Manor Walk.

The work was agreed after a survey of users of the extensive church buildings showed a need for small meeting rooms.

Cash for the work came from section 106 agreements, which are money paid by developers for community improvements.

A spokesman for the church said: “The church’s popular Fun and Friends toddler group has restarted following the building work and the next Messy Church with crafts, puppets, singing and tea is on April 17 from 3 to 5pm. The halls are also used by Junior Church and Sunday Club for children, the Baptist Youth Club, and community groups including Guides, bridge club, Rock Choir, Harborough Singers and the stroke club.”

The main contractors were WW Brown and Sons, R and J Decorators and MV Installations.

The Rev Nicholas Cook, Baptist minister, said: “We are delighted that the Baptist Church community facilities for the town have been much improved, and look forward to seeing existing and new groups make use of them.”
