The man aged 37 from Wigston was held after the dramatic incident in the Harborough village in the early hours of Friday morning (February 7).

The brave police officer, who hasn’t been named, had a lucky escape.

She was “clipped” by the speeding car as she jumped out of the way in the nick of time or she could have been seriously injured.

The drama blew up when police were tipped off that two men were “attacking a shutter” at a shop in High Street, Husbands Bosworth.

The two suspects were trying to break into the store between Berridges Lane and Bell Lane just before 1am on Friday morning.

They were said to be driving a red/maroon-coloured Renault Megane sports car.

Police raced to the village and quickly spotted the vehicle in Bell Lane.

One of the suspected burglars, who was armed with a crowbar, leapt out of their motor.

The police officer courageously tried to stop the suspect and seize him.

The high-powered Megane was then driven at the officer.

She jumped out of the way before being run over but was “clipped by the vehicle”, Leicestershire Police said.

The policewoman fell to the ground and suffered minor injuries as well as shock but she didn’t need hospital treatment.

The suspected raiders didn’t break into the shop and nothing was stolen.

A 37-year-old man from Wigston was later detained by officers.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and attempt to cause grievous bodily harm.

He has now been released on bail pending further enquiries after being questioned by detectives.

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “An investigation remains ongoing.

“Officers are appealing to anyone with any information, including CCTV or dashcam footage to make contact.”

Det Con Chantel Booth, of Leicestershire CID, said: “While the incident did happen in the middle of the night, we are still appealing to people who may have information which may assist us.
