A man is being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder after a petrol bomb was apparently hurled at a caravan on a Desborough travellers’ site.

Armed police were called out and the police helicopter scrambled after trouble erupted at the site off Braybrooke Road at about 12.45am.

Specialist firearms officers responded after police were alerted that a caravan had been torched in the violent disturbance in pitch-black darkness.

Firefighters raced to the scene to tackle the blazing caravan as the regional police helicopter helped to direct operations from up in the air.

A man of 44 from Desborough has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

A man aged 22 from the Wellingborough area was also detained by police on suspicion of arson.

The two suspects were still being questioned by officers on Wednesday afternoon about the violent incident.
