Club’s unbeaten run ends

Market Harborough Chess Club sustained its first loss of the Leicestershire league season after a close match away to Shepshed.

A draw by John Thomson and a win by Romilly Ilersic left the match level with one game left to finish.

Jonathan Newham obtained a winning position with an impressive attack against a higher-graded opponent but a shortage of time towards the end of the session affected both players.

Although still in a commanding position Jonathan lost on time when his opponent had only five seconds left.

Despite the 1 ½- 2 ½ defeat, the Market Harborough side remain joint leaders of Division 3 with the season at the half-way mark.
