Budding chefs make contest’s regional final

Two students from a Harborough school have qualified for the regional final of a cookery contest.

Mary Welton and Riley Watts, both aged 13 and from Welland Park Academy, qualified from the local round stages, held at their school on December 10.

Winner Mary won by a single point, impressing the judges with her winning dish of paella followed by an apple and frangipan tart served with warm caramel sauce. Runner-up Riley served fillet of salmon with spinach and crushed potatoes, followed by a dark chocolate fondant with ginger cream.

They will now battle it out in a regional cook-off atLoughborough College on February 12.

“Both students showcased their passion for food and a great variety of skills,” said a spokesman for the contest’s organisers, The Springboard charity.

The competition is a nationwide culinary initiative which provides lessons and insight into the culinary industry for those aged 12 to 16.

Mary said she was “very excited for the next round and looking forward to working with her mentor for the regionals”.

Riley said he is “keen to explore the industry more and has been offered a day with Martyn Harper of Graysons Restaurants”.
