Tesco is scrapping its plans to build to a superstore on Rockingham Road in Market Harborough.
The supermarket giant says it has failed to agree a deal with the landowner and is now withdrawing its controversial proposals completely.
Planning permission for the out-of-town store was granted in May last year by Harborough District Council and the company had reiterated its intention to open in Market Harborough despite axing plans for other large stores across the country, including nearby Desborough.
However the firm announced today (Friday) that the supermarket was not going ahead.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “We have been unable to agree a final contract with our vendor, so we will not be proceeding with plans for a store on this site.
“Thank you to everyone who supported our plans, and we look forward to continuing to serve the local community from our popular stores in the town.”
