Festive fun despite flu outbreak

Kibworth pensioners turned out for a Christmas party on December 14, 1989, although the attendance of 110 people was hit by a flu virus that swept the country 25 years ago this week.

About 60 people chose not to attend due to the flu outbreak, reported the Mail on December 14, 1989.

The event, at Kibworth Community Centre, included a buffet lunch and entertainment from singing caretaker Jess Owen, dancers from the Felicity West group and a dame from Kibworth Drama Society.

The party was first organised the year before, in 1988, and then ran annually until 2011.

In 1989 the flu epidemic in Britain claimed 29,000 lives.
