Scores of drivers turned up to be tested for Covid-19 at a new mobile testing centre in Market Harborough today (Wednesday).

Motorists from all over the area queued up bumper to bumper after the unit was set up at about 11am on The Commons car park in the town centre.

They had all booked special time slots as testing was by appointment only.

Army servicemen and women wearing masks or full face shields and medical gloves handed people kits as dozens of drivers packed into the crowded car park.

Cllr Amanda Nunn, Harborough District Council's health and well-being Cabinet lead, said: “I am delighted that so many local people have gone along to be tested.

“It’s absolutely vital that as many people as possible are tested after booking appointments.”

She added: “We need to know how many people have contracted coronavirus here in Harborough.

“It’s also clearly crucial that people themselves know whether they have the virus or not.

“This could free up frontline NHS staff and other essential workers to return to work.

“We have already had a mobile testing centre at the leisure centre in Market Harborough while it’s also visited Lutterworth.

“So it’s very positive that this very important facility has been to Harborough district three times.”

Amanda said the three-day testing centre will be operating in The Commons car park until Friday.

You can book an appointment through https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-getting-testedThe eligibility criteria for tests has been extended to include anyone aged over the age of 5 with symptoms.

Essential workers will be given priority.
