A £750 grant has been handed to Broughton Astley Volunteer Group, as well as to Enderby Mission Foodbank, by the Western Power Distribution Community Fund.

The award comes after Western Power invited 180 MPs in their region to nominate charities and groups that could benefit from a grant of up to £1,500.

South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa said: “Following a call for recognition from my constituents, I was delighted to formally nominate two extraordinary community groups from South Leicestershire who have made an immeasurable impact and helped local residents enormously through the pandemic.

“Both Broughton Astley Volunteer Group and Enderby Mission Foodbank have been doing brilliant, selfless work in supporting residents throughout this most difficult time.”

Mr Costa added: “I can’t thank Mark, Nick, Jules and everyone involved with their organisations enough for their brilliant work.

“I really hope this grant award will help these groups go from strength to strength, and I look forward to continue working closely with both moving forward”.

Mark Barber, co-ordinator of Broughton Astley Volunteer Group, added: “Broughton Astley Volunteer Group (BAVG) are delighted and honoured to receive a grant from Western Power Distribution Community Fund organised through Alberto Costa’s office.

“We would like to thank the local residents for nominating us for the work all the volunteers have done over the last 19 weeks.”

He added: “The grant will be used not only for supporting the work for vulnerable residents at this time of crisis but to enable us to support and create new social and community groups for the future as well as starting a village newsletter.”
