Harborough village school is becoming a local hub for key workers’ children during the coronavirus pandemic

A busy Harborough village school is becoming a dynamic local hub for key workers’ children during the coronavirus pandemic.

Lubenham All Saints CE Primary School is taking in youngsters from St Andrew’s CE Primary School, North Kilworth, Husbands Bosworth CE Primary School and Foxton Primary School every day.

The welcoming village school, rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in 2018, has been exploiting brilliant spring sunshine to get the kids actively working outside in their kitchen garden.

Children are rolling up their sleeves and tidying raised beds, replanting strawberry troughs and sowing seeds for salads, vegetables and ornamental flowers.

It was feared the well-established garden – opened annually to people as part of the popular Lubenham Open Gardens event – would suffer during the current crisis.

But the enthusiastic new class of critical workers’ children are thriving on the challenge of looking after it as they lap up the fresh air and sun.

They are rolling up their sleeves and tidying raised beds, replanting strawberry troughs and sowing seeds for salads, vegetables and ornamental flowers.

The children are also loving caring for and looking after the school’s three beloved chickens.

Pupils let out the hens in the morning and check for eggs as well as cleaning out the henhouse every week.

Proud Heather White, executive headteacher of the school since 2016, said: “It is lovely to see this group of children coming together to work so productively on our garden as they enjoy our beautiful grounds.

“Many fantastic new friendships are being made - and great new skills are being learned every single day.”

She added: “It is especially rewarding to see such a positive outcome during this challenging time.”
