The Carphone Warehouse on The Square is being axed.

It’s going as struggling parent company Dixons Carphone moved to close all 531 outlets nationwide.

The Carphone Warehouse will close its doors at the start of April – at the same time as major discount store B&M shuts on the nearby Commons car park.

Group chief executive Alex Baldock said they had to act as customers were increasingly buying online and from its big stores instead of its smaller, standalone mobile shops.

The dramatic mass closure will cost 2,900 posts across the UK.

But Dixons Carphone aims to find new jobs within the business for about 40 per cent of staff affected.
