Hundreds of shoppers from all over South Leicestershire are looking forward to the market returning after it shut amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

New social distancing measures will be imposed in a bid to stop the coronavirus spreading.

They will include fencing of The Square to create a one-in, one-out queuing system at entry, a revised layout and hand sanitiser stations.

Sit down seating will not be available.

And shoppers will be asked not to touch produce without buying and are encouraged to pay by card.

Cllr Phil King, the leader of Harborough District Council, said: “I am really pleased we are able to run the Farmers Market again, supporting our local producers and their customers.

“We have introduced a number of measures to ensure that the market will be a safe space so that the public feel confident to come out and support the traders.”

The Farmers Market will be back next week after the town’s historic 800-year-old indoor market hall has fully re-opened.

“I would also urge shoppers to get behind the businesses at Harborough Market too,” said Cllr King. “It’s been a particularly difficult period for the non-essential goods traders, who need shoppers’ custom now more than ever.”
