It’s full steam ahead as over 70 model locomotives are set to go under the hammer in Market Harborough.

You will get the chance to snap up a prized loco from the brilliant collection of one of Leicestershire’s top model railway enthusiasts.

Gildings Auctioneers is offering the astonishing array of locomotives in their eyecatching virtual Live Steam auction on Tuesday August 18.

They form part of the estate of Kenneth ‘Mike’ Abbott.

Bidders will get the opportunity to buy locomotives made by leading model train companies such as Accucraft, Bachmann, Aster and Locomotive Works.

It is rare for such an amazing, wide-ranging collection to come to auction.

And cash raised from the showstopping sale will be given to the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway.

All lots will be offered without reserve.

“We are excited to offer this fantastic collection of live steam train locomotives to auction,” said Gildings’ model railway specialist, Andrew Smith.

“The extensive collection dates back to the 1990s and includes both pre-built models and kit-built models, with each representing a time-consuming project requiring considerable skill and experience.

“Each part of the collection was produced in very small numbers and most of it remains highly sought after by collectors today.”

Kenneth Abbott, known as Mike to his friends, was a leading member of Leicester Model Railway Group.

He exhibited and ran his locomotives all over the UK.

As a result, the majority come in handmade wooden cases for transportation and protection and in excellent condition.

When at home in Leicester, his beloved locos circled a stunning garden route weaving between trees and plants, even going over his garden pond.

“Whether you are starting your own collection, or adding to an existing railway layout, these locomotives represent a rare opportunity to build a collection from one of our county’s leading collectors,” added Andrew Smith.

“In line with Government guidance, interested parties can book online to view the collection on the 13th, 14th and 17th August.

“The catalogue is also available at www.gildings.co.uk and clients can register their interest now via the website.”

Given Abbott’s lifelong enthusiasm for railways, it is fitting that the proceeds of the sale will boost the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway.

The much-loved line was built in 1903 to link farming communities with the local market town of Welshpool.

Following its closure in 1956, a group of enthusiasts began the process of re-opening the railway in 1963.

Today it is a treasured tourist attraction that relies on private support to stay on track.
