A new post office opened in Market Harborough town centre on Wednesday June 10 – two hours late.

The important new service has been unveiled at a new convenience store at 17 Adam and Eve Street.

It was due to open at 1pm.

But baffled shoppers turned up in heavy rain to find a notice on the front door declaring that its opening had been delayed.

And the post office and store finally opened its doors to customers at 3pm.

The Post Office has not explained why it opened slightly behind schedule.

The empty unit “underwent a big refurbishment to incorporate a Post Office and convenience store,” said the Post Office.

Experienced Postmaster Ash Singh also runs two other branches.

The town centre’s former post office was based just a stone’s throw away at 12 St Mary’s Place.

The operator resigned but delayed closing their Mace outlet until the new unit was ready.

“The relocation of Market Harborough post office has enabled us to maintain a Post Office service for our customers in the local community without a gap in service.

“There are three serving positions,” said the Post Office. “There is a dedicated area of the convenience store for a full-screened counter and a low-screened counter.

“There is a Post Office serving point alongside the retail counter of the store for the convenience of customers.”

The post office will be open from 9am-5.30pm Monday to Saturday.

Four popular, long-serving workers at the old branch, employed by shop owner James Retail, have been made redundant.

They have thanked customers for their loyalty and friendship over many years after losing their jobs.
