Tim remains the one to beat

TIM Smith’s domination of Welland Valley CC time trials continued as he powered around the Langton 10 course in a time of 23mins 09secs.

Triumphant Smith finished ahead of David Clarke, second in 23.44, and Peter Watson, third with 24.33.

Louis Killworth put in an excellent ride, finishing just over one minute behind father Adrian – 27.20 and 26.18 respectively.

Paula Fletcher was the fastest woman rider with 30.41.

Barkstone Heath Circuit Races, the under-10/under-12 race saw Welland’s Fay and Matt Garner both ride well.

At u14/u16 level Jade and Ria Mobbs went clear of the rest of the girls and eventually sprinted for a photo finish. Jade got the nod and Ria took second girl.

Louis Killworth was in the lead group but couldn’t follow the first three when they attacked. He rode off of the front of the chasing group and time trialled round for much of the race to take fourth. James Garratt managed to stay in the main u16 group to take seventh.

In the 4th cat race, Adrian Killworth failed to stay with the leading bunch, but ended up in a chasing bunch of up to 12 riders. This developed into a race within a race where the first objective was not to get lapped. Killworth sprinted to third in the group, well behind the lead bunch but he was not lapped.

On Saturday six Welland Valley riders competed in the rain-hit Diane Cooke Memorial 10 mile time trial hosted by Coventry CC.

Matt Plews was the fastest of the club’s male riders competing, finishing the course in 23.09, ahead of Ian Waterfield, 23.32, and Grant Warwick, 29.29.

Claire Waterfield was the fastest of the Welland women riders, with 25.37, ahead of Linda Hubbard, 26.03, and Katie Hubbard, 30.20.

Three Welland Valley riders rode the Kettering CC 18.4-mile time trial on Sunday morning.

After riding the Coventry CC 10 the previous day, Matt Plews was not expecting much in terms of performance, however he set a new personal best on the course, recording 44.43, good enough for tenth overall.

Dave Birch rode a solid race and was pleased with his performance with a time of 49.43 and Tony Hutton finished with 1.00.49.

The winner was James Coleman, Witham Wheelers, in 40.33.
