Final rally’s big reward

HARBOROUGH ‘A’ secured promotion to division one of the Leicester and District Winter League with an excellent team effort as they finished second in the third and final round held at Burton.

The girls’ 15/u team led the way, winning five out of their six races.

Candice Hall was victorious in the 100m back and fly, with Olivia Weller taking the 100m breaststroke and narrowly missing out on the 100m free, finishing second. The pair were joined in the relays by Lauren Murphy and Grace Bolton to win the freestyle and Lauren Bekavac and Murphy in the medley. In the open age group they almost managed an identical outcome with Hall winning the back and Weller taking the breaststroke.

Kirsty Haynes showed some gritty swimming, winning the 100m free and taking second in the 100m fly. It was not surprising that the trio, in conjunction with Charlotte Maxfield, won both the free and medley relays by a considerable distance.

The 13/u girls’ team of Bekavac, Bolton, Rhiannon Cook and Emily Kendall gained an unexpected but deserved victory in their medley relay.

The boys’ team found victories harder to come by. But the 11/u team of Rhys Cook, Jay Newman, Josh Wellicome and Charlie Poole continued to improve, winning both their free and medley relays. Poole also took victory in the individual free. Tom Tonge secured the only other win of the night for the boys in the 15/u 100m free.

The evening was rounded off in superb fashion with the 8 x 25m freestyle canon, in which one boy and girl from each age group swim in ascending age order. Four teams were still in contention on the last leg, with the Harborough group of Kendall, Poole, Bolton, Henry Ingram, Hall, Tonge, Haynes and Harry Waddington snatching a stunning victory.

Team events aren’t just about winning races and on the night there were excellent performances throughout the entire Harborough squad. Finishing one or two places higher than the opposition makes a big difference to the overall score

Result: 1st Etwall (240), 2nd Harborough A (205), 3rd Sharks C (187), 4th Penguins D (152), 5th Burton (129), 6th Hinckley Red (101).
