BRIXWORTH’S Caitlin McClatchey finished seventh in the final of the 200m freestyle last night (Tuesday) in a race which saw the Olympic record broken.
The 26-year-old swimmer recorded a time of 1:57.60 in a race in which even US sensation Missy Franklin and Italian world record holder Federica Pellegrini came away with nothing.
Franklin’s compatriot Allison Schmitt won in 1:53.61 - a Games record - followed by Camille Muffat of France and Australia’s Bronte Barratt.
McClatchey, who grew up in Brixworth, still has another chance of a medal in the 4x200m relay tonight (Wednesday).
“The crowd was so amazing tonight, I want to thank everyone for their support,” she said after last night’s race. “I’ve had a great time and really enjoyed it. I’ve got a strong relay coming up on Wednesday and I’m really excited and looking forward to it, so now I can rest and recharge my batteries.”

McClatchey was also in action on Saturday in the 4x100m relay competing in the GB team which finished fifth.
The race was won by Australia, with the Netherlands in the silver position, and USA taking bronze.
