VIXENS girl players from Market Harborough RFC finished second at the Grasshoppers Festival – and also had the thrill of meeting one of the sport’s legends.
Following a highly successful league season, Vixens under-15s travelled south to Grasshoppers RFC near Isleworth for the first of two festivals.
This was the girls’ first visit to the well-established festival where they competed against three other sides in a round-robin, ten-a-side and 15 minutes each-way competition.
In their first game against Ellingham Sirens (combined Solent Sirens and Ellingham and Ringwood team), Vixens put a determined stamp on the game with an early converted try.
Despite coming back with a try of their own, the opposition were unable to convert and in the second half Vixens took control of the game, achieving a second try and conversion to close the game at 14-5.
Within minutes of their first game being completed, Vixens were back on the field against Medway.
It became clear that this was to be a much tougher game for them against a larger and more experienced side. Despite all their efforts to penetrate the Medway defence, Vixens were unable to get through and Medway dominated the field, scoring six tries in the process and finishing with a 30-0 win.
Vixens pulled themselves together for the final game against a combined Newmarket and St Neots side. Undaunted by their earlier defeat, Vixens were determined to finish on a high and worked hard to secure a well-deserved 12-0 win.
With the games over, and the teams gathered for the awards, Vixens were delighted to find that their first visit to the Grasshopers Festival had resulted in them being runners-up behind Medway.
To present the runners-up medals to the team was none other than current Saracens Ladies and England Women vice-captain Maggie ‘the machine’ Alphonsi, a legendary player in the women’s game with 63 England caps and 25 tries for her country.
The Vixens line-up was: Leah Bartlett, Chloe Andrews, Hannah Mance, Alex Watson, Katie Lowther, Megan Porter, Charlotte Farnsworth, Ellie Batten (captain), Anna Chadburn, Elli Randon, Libby Turner, Molly Brooks and Hema Trivedi.
Vixens’ next challenge will be on May 12, the RFUW National Junior Sevens Tournament at Lichfield.
