Time runs out

A MIXED season for Market Harborough 1st XV came to a disappointing end when they were narrowly defeated at Oadby Wyggs in their final league game.

A number of try-scoring opportunities were missed by both sides as strong defence and handling mistakes dominated an error-strewn first-half.

A solitary Oadby penalty was the only score at the break as the two teams battled to assert their authority.

Oadby started to dominate both possession and territory early in the second half and were rewarded with a second penalty.

Harborough lost focus in this period and poor tackling presented Oadby winger Tom Claffy with space in the corner for the game’s first try.

That seemed to stir Harborough into action and winger Tom Bale finally crossed the try line to put his team on the scoreboard. However the resurgence was short-lived as Wyggs immediately responded with a try under the posts. With the conversion successful, Oadby stretched their lead to 18-5.

Adam Blatchly made a terrific impact for Harborough at fly-half and Ed Sumpter had a fine game in the back row and their efforts set up two late tries, one for Michael Woodford and a second for Tom Bale. Both Rhys Charlesworth and Jobe Jeacock performed well in the scrum and the younger faces in the team were encouraging for the future.

Although the final score of 18-15 was close, Harborough ran out of time to snatch victory in an evenly-matched contest.

Harborough Colts 10 Burton Colts 7

HARBOROUGH Colts returned to league action with their best performance of the season.

Despite losing several players to long-term injury in previous weeks and facing a powerful, well-organised side, they showed a determination and grit to which Burton had no response.

Ollie Jarvis claimed the decisive Harborough try, converted by Ben Windle, who had earlier kicked a penalty to give his team the lead.
