No substitute for experience, say promoted Vets

Seasoned campaigners....the Harborough Vets

MARKET Harborough RFC veterans proved ‘there’s still life in the old dogs yet’ – by gaining promotion at the first time of asking from Leicestershire League 5.

The Vets, who regularly travelled far and wide to find games, entered the league structure for the first time at the beginning of the 2011/12 season in a bid to find some local fixtures.

The discipline of league rugby has rekindled a competitive edge to a team who regularly dine out on past glories. The season has been one of the most successful in recent years, seeing them not only finishing second in the league and gaining promotion but also taking the bowl competition in the inaugural Harborough tens tournament.

Captain Tim Rodgers said: “The success of the team has seen several past players take once more to the field and a number of new ones join the club. The season has been close-fought however the Vets have proved experience counts at this level and their style of no-fear attacking rugby based around dominant forwards has reaped reward.

“Next season brings new challenges but the team are confident they can maintain their winning ways.”
