Girls’ team prepare for their first Euro visitors after success in clinching second league spot

A POWERFUL 32-12 victory at Barnsley in their final match of the season has earned second spot in the league for Market Harborough RFC Vixens’ under-15 girls.

The win was all the more impressive with three of the Vixens’ divisional players, including their normal half-back partnership and inside centre, not available.

The match was therefore an important test for some of the less experienced players, particularly in the backs, but the side rose to the occasion for a memorable triumph, underlining the squad’s strength in depth.

Chloe Andrews led the spree by claiming half of the team’s six tries and slotting a conversion kick.

There were also tries for captain Leah Bartlett, Ellie Randon and Alex Watson, while newest Vixens member Molly Brooks produced a fine try-saving tackle.

Tomorrow (Friday) Vixens under-15s are hosting their first European visitors in ASD Rugby Forlì 1979, a successful team from Italy. Kick-off is at 7.30pm and all supporters and interested girls and players are welcome.

Vixens coach Daren Parker said: “The games will be very special for the players as it’s their first night game under the floodlights on the first team pitch.”

Vixens under-13s travelled to Old Northamptonions for a friendly fixture last week.

That was also a sevens match, with both teams playing their first game since February.

Vixens benefited from a strong start as they cruised to a 35-5 victory.

A powerful early surge in defence pressured ONs, who dropped the ball and Georgina Watson picked up and drove over for the first score of the day.

Vixens’ dominance in the forwards was immense with further tries coming from Rose Smith, Tabatha Copson and Watson again, providing a comfortable half-time lead at 20-0.

A lapse in concentration at the start of the second half allowed ONs to score a try from their own line, but it wasn’t long before Vixens, through their forwards, began to dominate again, leading to further tries. Watson was on the mark again to help secure a comfortable victory.

A second game took place with Vixens lending players to ONs but still coming out winners at 10-5. A fine team effort included strong performances from Lauren Rolleson and Rebecca Ball.

Vixens under-13s will also be in action on Friday, facing ONs once more at 7.30pm. All are welcome.
