LUTTERWORTH GC hosted the opening county second team match of the new season.

Leicestershire and Rutland clashed with Midland League rivals Worcestershire in the first of a series of inter-county friendlies ahead of the new Anglian League campaign.

The first teams met away – at Wharton Park. But it proved a disappointing day for the new county captains Stuart Marriott, with the 1sts, and Jim Longstaff, with the 2nds, although there were some bright spots for both teams.

The sides included some local club members.

The 1sts lost 10-5 away and the 2nds went down 9-6 at Lutterworth. Both sides had trailed 4-1 after the opening foursomes, with the 1sts also losing the singles 6-4, while the 2nds drew 5-all in the singles session at Lutterworth.

Kibworth GC’s Martin Anderson and Shaun Corby (Whetstone) won the top foursomes at Wharton Park by 2 and 1 against Chris Healey and Richard Saddler and their other points came in the singles where Corby was a 4 and 3 winner; Chris Webb (Birstall), Kieran Foster (Melton Mowbray) and Oli Wilson (Park Hill) also won.

Ashley Mason (Glen Gorse) and Jack Mayfield (Kilworth Springs) were also in the firsts on the day.

At Lutterworth, the county’s foursomes point came fromNathan Tabor (Scraptoft) and Philip Rutherford (Willesley Park), and singles winners there were Jason Hercock (Glen Gorse) who was 1-up, Paul Dixon (Willesley Park), who took by 4 and 3, Tabor who took full points winning by 3 and 2, Ollie Bennett (Cosby) a 3 and 2 winner, and Henry Knight (Kirby Muxloe) who won by a 2 and 1 margin.

These inter-county friendlies provide an opportunity for younger, emerging golfers to come into the sides to gain more experience early in the season.

THE Leicestershire county golf Alliance tournament for the President’s Salver was a greensome medal decided this season at Whetstone, where Kibworth GC pro Bryn Morris and amateur Rita Roberts took the pro/am section award with their 69.2 card.

But overall winners of the salver were John Squires (Melton Mowbray) and Pat Etchingham (Kirby Muxloe) with their 66.4 return, one shot in front of Jason Tebbutt (Cosby) and Julie Barker (Lutterworth), who were on 67.4.

John and Chris Woodward (Kirby Muxloe) won the am/am section prize after a tie on 68.6, resolved on Alliance rule, with runners-up Graham Adani (Lingdale) and Doreen Brown (Scraptoft).

KIBWORTH won by 1-hole against Market Harborough when they met in the Daily Mail national women’s foursomes championship at Kibworth.

But the game went into sudden-death after the pairs Beth Taylor (18-handicap) and Barbara Arnold (22) were all square with Market Harborough’s Cherry Fleet (23) and Liz Harris (24) after 18-holes.

In the Mail on Sunday Kibworth women won 5-0 against Humberstone Heights, also at home. Celeste Currie (6), Emily Blount (9), Julie Simpson (11), Suzanne Clampin (14) and Trish Formoy (18) all won their games.

Lutterworth women beat Evesham 4.5-0.5 in this same national competition when the teams met at home. Bernie Dolan won, Christine Ratcliffe halved, with Lutterworth’s other wins coming from Jacqui Knight, Kate Frankham and Mary Hawkes.

RICHARD Hewitt (Nuneaton) amassed 45pts in winning round six of Division S in a winter seniors open Stableford tournament at Kilworth Springs.

R Woodhouse (St Andrews), with 43pts, was second, from three tied on 40 – Bryan Barwick (Rushden), Barry Russell (Cosby), Brian Godfrey (Hinckley). Sixth spot went to Terry Curtis (St Andrews) with 39pts.
