Men’s team’s confident start

TWO wins from two outings were completed by Market Harborough TC men’s Aegon team when they registered a comfortable 6-0 victory over LFE 3.

Chris Bevan and Tom Bradshaw were made to work in their singles but both proved too strong and won in straight sets.

Their doubles was also an awkward affair, with errors throughout, but they also eventually won in straight sets.

It was a much easier morning for Joe Van Diepen and Richard Breag. The former lost only one game in his singles and paired up with Breag, who didn’t lose a game in his singles to win 6-0 6-0.

However a much tougher test awaits the Harborough team in the next match away to David Lloyd.

The men’s first team struggled on a wet and windy evening away to a strong enderby team.

Alex Fry and Breag won their first two sets while Jonathon Brooks and Tom Bradshaw managed to win one of their first two. Clive Johnson and Joe Van Diepen didn’t win either of their first two sets but with the score finely poised at 3-3 going into the last rubber, both sides were confident.

However Van Diepen and Johnson were the Harborough only pair to win their last set and the team went down 5-4 overall.

The men’s third team’s fixture was rained off, as were the women’s first and second team games last week.

The women’s thirds have managed to play their two matches so far, losing one by eight sets to one against Houghton, and winning by the same margin at Bristall Watermead.

Chris Smith and Nicky Winch won three, Marilyn Knibb and Karen Westley also won three and Deborah Ellis and Julie Hunt won two.

The men’s thirds, playing their only game so far this season, narrowly lost to Hamilton 5-4. Dave Pye and Peter Roberts won three, Steve Draycott and Chris Norman won one and Chris Bull and Michael Gerrard, playing the match out at 4-4, narrowly lost the last set.

Harborough’s opening season tournament was another casualty of the wet weather.
