Record third strokeplay title in a row for maestro Matthew
THE Leicestershire and Rutland PGA Tarratt Stroke-Play Championship was won for a record third year in a row by Matthew Cort, who until he started his PGA training there was attached to Kibworth GC and lived in Harborough.
With the new sponsorship of Tarratt, this year’s championship was contested at Park Hill GC and after two successive victories at Lutterworth, Cort found Park Hill equally to his taste.
He hit two rounds of 3-under-par-70 for his 6-under-140 aggregate, winning by a stroke from Craig Shave (Whetstone), 70-71-141, with Matt Whelband of the host club (74-71-145) third, and Bryn Morris (Kibworth), on 146, fourth.
Morris had led with his opening 5-under-par-68 at the halfway stage. This was the low round of the tournament when the course was played 600-yards longer than on the previous day for the curtain-raiser pro/am.
Cort and Ian Lyner (The Leicestershire) led the pro medal in the pro/am with their 69 returns. Cort led the winning team on 129 on local rule from Lyner’s line-up.
Cort, now of Rothley Park, dropped only two shots over the two days of 54-holes – one in the pro/am, the other on the championship day.
COLD Ashby head professional Shane Rose shot level par 72 in a Northamptonshire PGA pro/am tournament at Collingtree Park GC. He was runner-up, one stroke behind Sam Jarman of the host club.
Rose led the winning team on 18-under-126 when his amateur partners included his father Capper, Dick Spaughton and Gordon Chiverton. They finished seven clear of their rivals.
A medal tournament at Cold Ashby was led by Ashley Lloyd (22) with his 64 net return.
Paul Askew (2) 65 net was runner-up, with Ashley Hammond (15) 67 third, Mark North (15) 68 fourth.
There was a four-way tie on 69 net, which saw Paul Fuller (5) fifth on local rule from Mel Bonser (13), Graham Bott (+1) seventh and Gavin Cope (scr), 69, eighth. Adam Ashenden (7) and Mike Fabb (8) completed the top ten when they had 70 net, resolved on countback from four more on this mark.
COUNTY first team golfer Martin Anderson (scr) won the Briggs Cup at his home club Kibworth when he amassed a total of 41 Stableford points. Chris Palmer, round in 76, won the scratch prize.
Roger Elliott (8), with 37pts, topped division one from two on 36 – Gary Blount (10) was second on local rule from Geoff Trill (10).
Patrick Carton (11), 37pts, led division two from Keith O’Neill (11), 36pts, with Simon Ward (15), 35pts, third; division three winner was Tim Haycock (16) with 40pts from Rob Goodacre (16), 39pts, and Daren Woolnough (18), 37pts, and in division four Mark Speight (25), with 41pts, was first from Gary Connell (20), 36pts, second on countback from Peter Thornley (21).
